Italy is my favourite favourite country not only in Europe but the whole world. It just comes very naturally to me, the sense of ease of being one. I almost feel like i am home even though i can count on my fingers the number of italian words i know and understand. I think it has to do with being Indian, the informal culture, family run shops and restaurants, talking like no one can listen, the best food is still in the homes, there are many street smart ways to get a work done, etc are just a few similarities to begin with. Anyways summers are ringing and that means trips and holidays and incase europe is on your list here are my top 6 reasons why you have to go to Italy.
- It has all the architecture and museums and art galleries in the world. And i cannot think of another country that even comes close. In Venice there is a museum or art gallery at almost every other corner, you can be in Venice for more than a month and still not be able to do it all, just so much to see and absorb. Similar is the case of Florence and Rome. Italy is really swell with history and UNESCO world heritage sites.
- Food- Almost impossible to have a bad meal in Italy or you get seriously unlucky, the quality of food and produce is the bestest in the world. If you think Italian food is just Pizza and Pasta well then my friend you are going to be amazed beyond words. You reach a trattoria or osteria for dinner by 6.30-7 and this is what can follow 1.aperetivo which can be a small glass of house wine with freshly baked bread, 2. antipasti ( appetizer ) can be prosciutto or salami or sausage or bruschetta or cold cuts, etc 3. Primi which is your risotto, pizza, gnocchi, pasta, etc and there are a gazillion varieties of pizzas and pastas in Italy, all freshly made from the scratch. 3. Secondi- A meat or sea food dish, don’t get shocked if i tell you this is the main deal and very region specific. For e.g in Milan you can enjoy Bollito, in emilia romagna i.e bologna you will love cotoletta all bolognese, in tuscany Bistecca alla Fiorentina, in venice Fegato alla veneziana, and so is the case with every region. 4. Contorni which is a side dish of vegetables or salad. 5. Formaggi e frutta - local cheeses and fruits. 6 Dolce- the yummmyyyyy desserts, the best in the world. and finally to wash everything no 7. caffe i.e a shot of espresso.
- The people- Not even kidding, i am mostly in great mood in Italy because of the compliments i get from absolute strangers both men and women. ‘bellssima, bellissima’ and i just can’t stop blushing. But the Italians are not only a very charming lot but also a very helpful one or at least they try to help you out. Even if they don’t know english, if they understand what you are saying they will try their level best to guide you through expression or sign or their broken english.
- The mood- Informal, you don’t have to be prim and proper with what you say and how you eat or talk. Italy is pretty chilled out, just be.
- There are a zillion festivals and events happening throughout the year. Its just so culturally rich after all and i am sure you can experience something good no matter what time of the year you go and where.
- Last but not the least its one heck beautiful. A natural wonder i would say with everything from golden beaches, to sparkling seas to shining glaciers to rocky mountains to picturesque lakes to gently rolling hills, it has it all. Every region is like a perfect postcard, be it the sweeping hillside vineyards and medieval villages in Tuscany or the lake view of camo or the skyline of venice or the streets of sardinia or the stylish people of milan or the crystal clear water of sicily, there is actually no region less than the other.
Venice
Rome
Florence
Sienna
Pisa
Bologna
San Gimignano
And some Venice again
There is just so much to see and absorb and do and eat that literally you can go to Italy every year and still not do it all in your lifetime. As i write this post my mouth is salivating and my mind can only focus on how to get on the next flight to Italy.
These pictures are a collection from trips old and new, most before i even started blogging.

Your right, so many people think that Italian food is such pizza and pasta but there is so much more to it. While my favorite cuisine is Indian and Thai I like the simplicity of Italian food and how easy it is to prepare. I would love to go to Italy someday x

ReplyDeleteI love Italy but I haven't been for years. I've been to Venice, Lake Garda and Sardinia, but Sorrento and the Amalfi coast really captured my heart and I went several years in a row. I would love to go back there, and also to visit Milan and Florence.

Italy is definitely one of my favorite countries in the world. The times I've been to Venice, Florence, Rome and Pisa have been just amazing.
ReplyDeleteOH MY!!! I sooo miss Venice. Italy is one of my favorite countries and Venice is definitely on of my fave cities, too. I totally agree with your points about the Italian culture. Although, from my experience, I didn't have a good experience with our first restaurant we ate at. Yes, the people are so friendly and helpful. I agree that there are lots of museums to choose from, but many of them also close on Sundays. The market and their festivals are sooo fun and lively, too. :) You look absolutely beautiful sitting on a gondola with your husband. And your hairstyle perfectly matches the Venezian atmosphere.
