Cotswolds travel, guide and itinerary

There is countryside and then there is The Cotswolds, England, i had heard and ah it surpassed all expectations to the point that i wished that i could live there forever. Infact, Vaibhav was in Delhi and after seeing my instastories he called to say for the first time, that he wants to be there right now!! So this was definitely my first of the many visits to come!!!!

It was early spring and the flower buds had started to make appearances, some trees had also begun to come to life but nonetheless The Cotswolds was the essence of the English charm, of thatched roof cottages, of rolling hills, of lush green fields and farms, of pleasing silence, of fresh crisp air, of quaint villages, of friendly people, of grand estates.

Though so close to the big city London it feels like you are in a different world where time stops to heal your soul to rejuvenate the senses forgotten. The Cotswolds delivers, be it a weekend getaway or a staycation or even just a day to escape city life and definitely a must on a trip to the UK.

Best time- Per usual June- October but its england, if the sun is out even a winter day can be glorious and if its raining a lot even a summer day can be a flop so do a weather check.

How to get there- The bigger towns of Cheltenham and Gloucester are very well connected from everywhere in the UK by train and coach. The smaller towns like stroud and Cincester have good connectivity too. From London you can reach any of the towns in just 2 hours by train from London Paddington and coach from London Victoria. If you decide to take public transport its best to reach any of the towns closest to ur selection of close knit villages and then explore on foot. But the best way really is to drive down or rent a car from the bigger towns and drive through to stop at any of the villages or spots at your convenience.

Where to stay- You will really be spoilt for choice from the many hotels and manors.  Some really great places are The Slaughters Country Inn in lower slaughter, The Broadway Hotel in Broadway. If home stays are more you booking.com and airbnb always deliver. We stayed with a family in Cheltenham, renting out their lower ground floor and it turned out to be the best decision as our landlord very kindly agreed to be our guide around the Cotswolds, a true Englishmen, he spoke in the typical Hugh Grant english that i love but it hardly enters my ears as there are just so many different accents throughout the country and specially difficult in London with its mix of people and the slang catching up!!!! It was such a treat to just listen to him, ok i totally sidetracked!!!!!!

The must visit-  I would say see everything as even though everything is made from the yellow limestone to look similar each place has its own unique charming characteristics. But if you have to choose, definitely Burton on the water, Stow on wold, Bibury and Lower and Upper slaughter.

What to do- From museums to castles to cooking classes to farms to distilleries to short courses to spas to walks to drives you can do it all but my favourite has to be sitting on a bench filling my lungs with the fresh crisp air and soaking into the country life.

Instagrammers heaven- The pictures speak and nothing to be said!

Eat- At the any great pubs and restaurants in abundance, food tastes good as the eating places are mostly family run and use local produce. Rest assured of a great meal of English pub food. I will definitely recommend stopping for tea even if you are doing a day trip. I had tea and scones with jam and clotted cream and my friend had mushroom balls with ham and cheese sandwich and fresh berry cake at this riverside tea room Vernes in Burton on the water and it was delish to say the least.

A simple itinerary - what we did. Day 1 - Reached Cheltenham, checked into our apartment, freshen up then went out to explore the town which i plan to cover in another post. Retired early so we could start the next day early. Day 2- We had planned to hire a taxi for 4-5 hours, it was very expensive about £40 an hour and to our great luck our landlord a retired englishman agreed to give a full tour of the cotswolds in just £80. So we left after breakfast around 10 stopping at our convenience at Broadway, Stone on wold, Chipping campden, Stroud, Burton on the water, Lower and upper slaughter, Bibury and also many random spots in between that we liked to take pictures and finally returned to Cheltenham at around 5pm well in time for our train at 7pm. So yes we were able to do almost everything including a tea break in about 7 hours. So its really possible to do a lot even on a day trip from London.

The real proof of being called an area of outstanding natural beauty, was in the 0 tiredness at the end of the day even after doing so much during our visit, the scenery and  the air were therapies, what nature really is, they still are, just have to close my eyes!

  12. OMG! Such travel porn! Haha this place looks absolutely darling. I love visiting places like this that have so much *charm*! I haven't been to the UK at all, but honestly if and when I do visit I would love to do more of a countryside thing. Forget the hustle and bustle of big cities--the Cotswolds is where it's at!
